Senate Fails to Override Trump’s Iran War Powers Veto


The Senate on Thursday failed to override President Trump’s veto of a resolution seeking to rein in his ability to take military action against Iran.
Senators voted 49-44, falling short of the two-thirds support necessary to nix Trump’s veto and send the effort to the House.
The Senate vote comes less than a day after Trump vetoed the resolution, marking the seventh time he has used his veto pen since entering office in 2017.
The resolution, spearheaded by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), would require Trump to pull U.S. troops from any hostilities against Iran within 30 days unless he gets congressional approval for the military action.

Trump’s War on Congressional War Powers Isn’t Over


On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump vetoed a bipartisan war powers resolution that would have required congressional approval to carry out military strikes against Iran, the latest in an ongoing battle between the White House and Capitol Hill over war powers authorities. The move sets the stage for a Senate vote today to override the veto that is all but certain to fail: The resolution passed the Senate by a 55-45 vote, short of the necessary two-thirds majority.
